I’m Taking Adolescent Literature!

I am so excited. This semester I am taking an Adolescent literature class and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I mean, a class where I get to read YA and it counts towards my major? Sign me up :)

So here is what I’ll be reading over the semester:

The Giver by Lois Lowry
Outsiders by SE Hinton
Monster by Walter Dean Myers
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Everafter by Amy Huntley
Absolutely True Diary Of Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Crank by Ellen Hopkins
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

There is a nice mix of books, though one thing I do wish is we were reading more of the lesser known gems of YA. I feel like everyone knows Thirteen Reasons Why, Speak, and The Hunger Games. There is SO much out there so reading the same old same old sometimes gets a bit old, ya know?

I’ve read everything but Fahrenheit 451, Crank, Monster, and Absolutely True Diary Of a Part Time Indian so I’m excited to read those. It also will be a lot of fun to reread some of the others since it’s been at least 2 years since I’ve read any of the others. It will also to be intersting to see what I think the second time around – I didn’t love The Hunger Games, in fact I almost didn’t finish it. I wasn’t a fan of the other Sherman Alexie book I’ve read so I’ll be curious what I think of this one. I also didn’t love Thirteen Reasons Why – I didn’t dislike it, but I don’t love it like most people do I feel like. So a reread of that one shall be interesting.

So the class is Monday and Wednesdays, so I’m thinking I’ll start doing some posts on the class for Tuesdays and Thursdays if we talk about anything interesting :) Because I know I will be bursting at the seams to talk about this class!

I took a YA lit class last summer and read a lot of these books, too! I hope you enjoy it… I had a ton of fun with my class.

That’s awesome that you are taking a YA lit class. I took one when I was in grad school for library science and it was a lot of fun. I think we read different books that you will be reading, though.

Sherman Alexie’s book is wonderful! I think you will like it. It’s funny, and sweet and also very emotional.

Sounds like a great class. The Outsiders caught my attention. Great book (& movie). So many stars in the movie, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillion, C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estivez, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayzey (SP?). Great story. I’m excited to see your thoughts on that one. It was a book we had to read when I was in school. Great post, great blog! Have a great day!

Um let me tell you how happy I am that you did not adore The Hunger Games to the end of the earth! I didn’t either. At all. HOWEVER the movies totally turned me around and I love those…so maybe rereading it will prove different for you?

Also, I took a YA Lit class back in the day and it was THE BEST. I’m interested to see how it impacts your reviewing! :)

That’s awesome! I took a YA Dystopian Lit class which was awesome! The only thing that sucked was it was Saturdays at 9 AM… yuck!

Oh and I have to agree with you about 13 Reasons Why! I feel like everyone loved that book and I enjoyed it, but I didn’t fall in love with it.

    Hope you enjoy your class!

Count us in with the group who was lukewarm to 13 REASONS. Like, it’s all right, but it’s pretty heavy-handed (i.e., not subtle) and the narrator was kind of bland.

However, we loved HUNGER GAMES and ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY, so hopefully you’ll enjoy those when you read them for class! Either way, we’re looking forward to seeing how the class goes for you.

Crank is one of my favorite books. I hope you enjoy it! It’s written in prose and the subject matter isn’t “clean” but I think it’s great for teens to read.

This sounds great! I took a YA lit class my senior year and had SUCH high hopes for it as it was all about Harry Potter. However, it turned out to be the WORST class of my entire under grad career and this professor ALMOST ruined HP for me. I hope you have a WAY better experience! Keep us in the know!
