Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and Bookish. Each week features a different topic, and you make a top ten list about it. This week’s topic is the Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters.

This is an interesting week for me, since I know a lot of characters I find frustrating are some of people’s favorites.

Katsa from Graceling by Kristin Cashore – She is one of those characters that bugged me to no end. She just was so STUCK and it drove me nuts. I kept waiting for her to evolve and move forward with life.

Katniss from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – Katniss is a character I disliked so much I almost didn’t finish the book. She drove me crazy. I did like her more in Catching Fire – I felt she rounded out more as a character.

Jane from Dark Companion by Marta Acosta – She was a character where I kind of wanted her to get her head checked out. She is supposed to be so smart yet she doesn’t quite use it in the real world.

I also find Pietr from the 13 to Life series pretty frustrating at times. Also Jessie. Both of them sometimes need their heads on straight.

Meghan Chase from the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa – Don’t get me wrong, I love this series so so much, but Meghan is one of those frustrating characters to me. I always want her to not play the damsel in distress.

Kate from The Goddess Test series by Aimee Carter – Kate is a bit too wishy washy to my liking at times.

What characters were on your list?

I know what you mean about Kate from the Goddess Test series. That girl needs to grow a backbone, for crying out loud. I haven’t read the final book in the series yet (oh, how I’d love an ARC of that one), but I really hope that with her child in the mix, she grows a pair of brass ones finally.

    Great list! Here’s mine – http://kristasdustjacket.blogspot.com/2013/01/top-ten-tuesday_29.html

Kate was so whiny in Goddess Interrupted I was ready to throw the book against the wall.
    Great picks

Meghan Chase is so frustrating, I agree. Just ask some questions rather than rushing in and needing to get rescued!

Both Katniss and Megan Chase were on my list too and I love both The Hunger Games and The Iron Fey series. Its nice to know I’m not the only one annoyed by Megan’s inability to save herself from her own battles.

I’m surprised to see how many people didn’t like Katniss. I read the books a long time ago, but I’m pretty sure I liked her? I don’t know.

Katniss made my list too, more for how she was in the final book than the first one. Meghan is an extremely frustrating character, but I including Ash on my list instead, because I hated how he blew hot and cold all the time!

There are a lot more Katniss haters (or at least dislikers) than I realized. I personally really like Katniss’ character, but reading so many peoples’ posts about how frustrating Katniss is, I can see where they’re coming from. With the exception of Katsa and Katniss, I haven’t read the other books, and now I can feel justified in doing so if they’re full of frustrating characters. :)

Nooo, I love Katsa and Graceling! I will grant that the plot isn’t terribly original, but I just love the feminist themes. It’s not often in YA lit that you find a female character who isn’t a shrinking violet.

Here’s my Top Ten for the week. Happy reading!
